Students in Antwerp have had an official say in city policy since 2003. Student representatives advise the city council via the Antwerp Student Council (ASC). Together with the city of Antwerp and 34.000 students, the ‘ASC’ works hard for a bristling college town.

The Antwerp Student Council comprises 18 representatives of the various colleges and the University of Antwerp. Delegates of the students’ fellowships and the students’ groups are represented as well. The spokesperson is selected alternately from a college umbrella organisation and the VUAS (Verenigde UA-studenten). Liveability of the student district is a big issue. At the beginning of every meeting, people can ask questions to the police during question time. A representative of the cabinet of Education is always present at the meetings. The students who sit in the council also represent their supporters in other consultative bodies such as the urban youth council (stedelijke jeugdraad) and the governing board of Antwerpen Studentenstad. The students meet quarterly with the principal players in the student district. Student spokesman: Orry Van de Wauwer (orry [dot] vandewauwer [at] student [dot] ua [dot] ac [dot] be)contact for foreign students: Jorgen Muylaert (esn_team [at] hotmail [dot] com), ESN
